My name is Jacob Hall and I’m in the Suisun Valley 4-H club. I’m 14 years old and I have been in 4-H for 9 years. The projects I’m taking this year are; poultry, leadership, woodworking, metalworking, and owls. Raising the baby chicks was part of an Emerald Star project I am doing through 4-H, which will allow me to become a county or state ambassador for 4-H. The main objective was to educate the students on the life cycle of a chicken. Some of the main facts I introduced were; it takes 21 days to hatch a chick, eggs can be brown, white, and blueish-green, and that you can’t just go to a store and buy eggs to hatch them because they aren’t fertile. 9 chicks hatched out of the 24 eggs that were in the incubator. Considering that we only have 5 roosters for 400 hens I thought that the outcome was excellent. We have to vaccinate the chicks for mareks disease when they are 1day old so that we are able to sell them. The baby chicks must be kept at 95 degrees fahrenheit until their feathers grow out.
